About Us

Terrific Science Outreach is led by Mickey Sarquis and Lynn Hogue. The CHED Fall 2007 Newsletter describes Mickey and Lynn as having the expert choreography of a Broadway show and more energy than a thermite reaction. They have wowed audiences around the world with workshops that are guaranteed to help you make chemistry relevant and thoroughly enjoyable for kids of all ages.

Mickey Sarquis has impacted 21,500 teachers through her outreach efforts. These teachers reach more than 1 million students in their classrooms each year. She has reached an additional 20,000 teachers through informal initiatives. While these numbers are impressive, they are only one aspect of Mickey’s outreach impact. Mickey has led student outreach programming reaching an estimated 50,000 students. She has trained thousands of university faculty, industry scientists, and teachers to conduct their own outreach. Even students are recruited to do outreach with younger children. Her more than 60 book publications impact even more students, families, and teachers. More about Mickey…

Talk about a depth and breadth of experience in science education… Lynn Hogue seems to have done it all. A classroom chemistry teacher for 27 years, Lynn first encountered Terrific Science Programs as a teacher-participant in the NSF-funded Teaching Science with TOYS program. The experience was a positive one, to say the least. The instructional staff was so taken with Lynn that she was asked to join them as a teacher leader for the program. One thing led to another and she eventually signed on full time with Terrific Science in 1992. Today she designs outreach that represents the best science educators have to offer. After all, she brings the perspective of a seasoned classroom educator and a professional development participant to the challenge, along with a love of science that is obvious to all around her. Mickey Sarquis
Highlights of Mickey’s outreach efforts include workshops for teachers in every summer since the mid 1980s; student programming such as camps, carnivals, family science nights, industry ambassador programs, and museum programs; engaging outreach themes such as chemistry with toys, industry-based science, and science and literature integration; mentoring industry scientists in outreach; and partnering with the American Chemistry Society to facilitate National Chemistry Week outreach.

Mickey’s outreach efforts have raised the bar for others around the country. Her publication in The Journal of Chemical Education, entitled “Recommendations for Offering Successful Professional Development Programs for Teachers” (2001) has become a template and model for all involved in teacher outreach and education. She receives countless invitations to present her outreach models across the country and throughout the world. Currently she traverses the country as an ACS Tour Speaker, guiding others to engage in their own outreach. Her numerous awards include the American Chemical Society Helen Free Award for Public Outreach, 2008; American Chemical Society Cincinnati Section, Chemist of the Year, 2006; National Association of Partners in Education Award, 1998; National Science Foundation Best Practice for Undergraduate Curriculum in Analytical Sciences, 1997; Chemical Manufacturers Association Catalyst Award, National 1994, Regional 1986; Project Kaleidoscope Programs that Work, 1993; Chemical Manufacturers Association Recommended Model Program, 1992; State Model Program, U.S. Department of Education, 1992; Outstanding University Educator, Ohio Academy of Science, 1990. Throughout all of her efforts, Mickey remains focused on sharing her love of chemistry with everyone she comes in contact with. Her enthusiasm provides a rejuvenating effect for even the most experienced chemistry educators.
